Today's edition be a 4 minute read.

Let's dive into it.

Focus On This FIRST

I sit to write this on a calm Friday morning

I can hear my dad talking to my neighbor about hardware supplies

Even though it is not yet 8 am the sun is bright and the warmth is rising

It’s probably going to be another scorching day here on the island

This summer has been HOT!

Last night at training I was infuriated

Not many things make me angry

Seeing people taking opportunities for granted is one thing that does

At a basic level, we will all make mistakes

We know our capabilities and we know when we are underperforming

With that being said, we also know when we are cutting corners

It always catches up with us, if not immediately, at the time it hurts most

For me, not trying hard is NOT acceptable

If you will dedicate time to doing anything, you might as well give 100%

Or as close to that level as you are physically and mentally capable

Mediocrity becomes a habit

It starts with skipping reps at the end of your workout

Then you start dropping the number of sets you do because you are “tired”

Before you know it, you are no longer paying attention to your diet

Then in 6 months, your workout habit is gone and the pounds are piling on

What am I saying?

Effort is one of the few things you can control

Failure to give an honest account of yourself is NOT acceptable

You not only sell yourself short, but you deprive everyone around you of growth as well

No one is asking for you to be perfect

But they are asking for good honest effort

Effort (your best on the day) is a basic non-negotiable

How To Build Effective Online Growth Systems

I recently built a streamlined system to help me with growing this newsletter

As you may know, I have had some success with Instagram marketing

This project (Chasegrowth) arose from an idea to build an Instagram page

As much as I love writing these emails, marketing intrigues me most

I wanted to create this small segment where I show BTS the process

The goal is to show you how I go about building systems

The hope is to inspire you to do similar within whatever tasks you have

Onward

Step 1: Utilize First Principles Thinking

First principles thinking is a problem-solving and creative thinking approach that involves breaking down complex problems or concepts into their most fundamental and basic components. It's a way of thinking that dates back to ancient philosophy, particularly Aristotle, but it has gained significant popularity in modern innovation and entrepreneurship, thanks in part to Elon Musk's advocacy for it.

Chat GPT

For marketing a project like this, First Principles would look like:

Strategy development

Content research

Content creation

Instagram posting + management

Step 2: Consider Pareto’s Principle

I’m sure you have heard of the 80/20 rule by now

In sum, 20% of inputs correlate to 80% of outcomes

With a project like this, maximizing my time is the most important

I need to focus on tasks that move the needle and outsource the rest

Here is a breakdown of the time commitments:

It’s easy to see which task could quickly become a pain in my a$$ on a daily basis

Content creation

Therefore, I chose to focus on strategy and research and outsource creation

Posting and MGMT can easily be automated with tech, however, I choose to do this manually for reasons that I will discuss in a future lesson on optimizing IG growth (when we blow up)

So, I know I want to outsource the creation

How do I do this effectively?

Step 3: Create an Organized workflow

When doing my strategy development, I chose content with three elements:

  • Highly relatable/shareable

  • Easy to find in abundance

  • Cheap to outsource

The type of content on the Chasegrowth IG page can cost around $4 - $10 per post

I was able to find a freelancer willing to do it for $5

I then created a notion database to allow me to track and manage the creation

Here is the simple workflow:

I just drop links to post inspiration from my research → He accesses the document and creates a first draft → I look at the draft and ask for reviews → we iterate until the post is perfect

Here is a look at the database I created:

As a bonus, he sends all posts to me via Google Drive so I have a folder I can always refer to with a backlog of posts. (It is fine to recycle best-performing posts after 3 months)

I quickly want to show you just how effective this is for me:

Consider I have an hourly rate of $50 USD for freelance marketing services

On a monthly basis, creating posts would take up 30 hours of my time (1 hour per day)

That translates to 30 x $50 = $1500 (opportunity cost)

Outsourcing for $5 per post would cost me $150

Therefore, I actually save $1350 ($1500 - $150) by hiring the freelancer

For me, time is my most valuable asset, so I see this as a massive savings

Step 4: Testing + Optimization

The beauty of building on social media is how quickly you can gather data

As an experienced IG marketer, I can tell within 1 hour how well a post will perform

As posts go out I will be looking for 3 types of high-performing posts

  • Posts that have high amounts of organic shares

  • Posts that generate lots of comments

  • Posts that get massive exposure on the Explore page

With this information collected, I can then start the whole process over again

My research will be more tailored towards high-performing posts

Future posts will be created with perks to help increase performance

Production speed is high and sustainable because I outsource

Testing and iteration speed are high because of IG distribution

Pretty neat right?

TL;DR

How To Build Effective Online Growth Systems

  1. Utilize first principles thinking

  2. Apply Pareto’s Principle

  3. Create an organized workflow

  4. Test + Optimize
