Today's edition be a 3 minute read.

Let's dive into it.

On Wednesday night I was on my way out to a football game

I told my mum I would be back in a couple of hours and proceeded to leave

In response, she did not say, “have fun” or “enjoy your game”

She said, “be careful”

It turns out her warnings were right

During the game I tweaked my hamstring

I know exactly why this happened

I have been training hard and haven’t been sleeping well

I felt in my body that I was on the threshold and had to be careful

Now I sit here writing this with a 5/10 pain bellowing at the back of my left leg

I’ll be fine, it’s not my first tweak

When it happened I wasn't angry I had to stop playing

I wasn’t concerned that I would be in pain for a few days

I was mad that it could keep me from playing for a while

No matter how much pain this game causes me (mental and emotional)

I will do what I need to do to come back as soon as I can

That’s kind of sick, isn’t it?

But it confirms a trend I have noticed recently

That athletes are the closest thing to modern-day gladiators

Think about it

As an athlete, you live a very unconventional life

It’s hard to explain to most people

Most athletes don’t ever make enough $$ from their sport to live well

Yet, they give up time and potential career stability to pursue their passion

With contact sports, you are doing something that endangers your health

Thousands of people gather in arenas to see you try to destroy other athletes

People love you when you are winning and hate you when you lose

You are famous today and forgotten about tomorrow

When you get injured, no one cares

Whenever you retire, or quit, another swiftly takes your spot

Satisfying the crowd’s constant need for entertainment

People talk about you like an object, not a person

With no care about the other 90% of things that might be happening in your life

Nobody believes in you until you “make it”

Then they say, “I always knew she had what it takes!”

Throughout all of this, we choose to keep going

We choose to come back to the arena

We take our public bashing and bruising and defeats

We regroup, train harder, conquer our personal demons

We try again and again until we can physically go no further

For ancient gladiators this meant death

In some ways maybe the ultimate reprieve

Every athlete knows that the sport stops, but your passion does not

That fighter inside you never dies

He is always hungry and competitive

She always wants to win and every loss hurts like a fresh cut of the blade

The athlete is the true Modern Day Gladiator!
