How to use X to build your brand

Hello 👋🏾

Today's edition be a 6-minute read.

If you are ready, I am ready.

It’s Not What You Say, It’s How You Say It

I made a post on X this week that missed the mark

For me, based on views, this would be considered viral

However, engagement was very low

Take a look and tell me what you think

Off brand?

A couple of people said that I could just do both

One guy said I was just chasing attention

Maybe all of them were right

Overall, regardless of reactions, I love this outcome

The post made people feel the urge to reply

It gave me new eyes on my content

Which is very important for growth

Growth, however, is not my main concern when it comes to X

I use it as a testing ground

A place to get quick feedback on concepts to repurpose

Here is my flow:

• Test quickly on X

• Identify the most viral post

• Repost them on LinkedIn and IG

• Turn the concept into a short-form video

Therefore, the foundational place for my best posts is X

By the time I get to making a video, I know it will do well

The concept has already been validated on three platforms

I am no expert when it comes to building on X

But here are a few tips and tricks I’ve picked up so far

1. Build A System

There are three main personas on the X platform:

  1. People who never post

  2. People who post spontaneously

  3. People who plan and schedule their posts

Which ones do you think make the most of the platform?

From my experience, every person who is big on X has built a system

Either

They hire a “ghost writer” to post consistently for them

Or…

They use software to help them schedule posts

Writing should be a ritual

You are building the muscle of writing

Then you let the algorithm and audience show you the gold and the trash

As for posting software, you can check out Hypefury or Hootsuite

For me, I’ve built my system on notion

Whatever you do, don’t be the sucker suffering from verbal diarrhea

Blurting things on the internet without giving thought to them

Create some space between when you write and when you post

Let’s move on.

2. Format Your Posts

The format of your X posts (tweets) is as important as the things you say

Long chunky pieces of text won't cut it

Take a look at two of my best-performing posts recently

Can you notice a pattern?

Here is the breakdown:

  1. Catchy headline statement

  2. Transitional text to a listicle

  3. Contrarian or relatable listicle

  4. Contrarian or relatable summary statement

Keep your lines short (one line if possible)

Practice saying your thoughts in as few words as possible

Write, write, write

Post, post, post

Onward.

3. Be Social

I like the X platform

Getting discovered on X however, is the hardest of all social media

The algorithm seems to favor bigger creators much more than small

This is the inverse of most other social platforms

The solution? Be Social!

On most other platforms, there is an unspoken hierarchy

The creators are on a pedestal and the commentators are just a by the way

On X the playing field is level

If you want to be seen, you need to join the conversation

You need to reply to as many people as you can daily

As I mentioned, growth is not my main objective

But…I have grown the most when I was consistently replying to others

I think this is a good habit to develop on social media

Becoming comfortable sharing your real views on posts online

I realize that it has affected how I use other platforms

Now and then I will make a comment on IG that goes viral

It has a similar effect, new eyes on your work

Probably the original social media growth strategy

Utilize it smartly to see a big boost in impressions and profile visits

TL;DR

Tips to use X to build your brand:

  • Use it as a testing ground

  • Write and post at separate times

  • Build a system to post consistently

  • Use an attractive format for your posts

  • Engage with others to get eyes on your work
