Get In The Lab!

2023 has been a year full of progress.

I can say this because I have the data to support it.

Coming into the year I felt like I was spinning my wheels.

I was doing a lot, but my direction was hard to decipher.

It was not that I was not moving in the right direction.

It was that I had not done a good job of tracking my progress.

What changed?

I implemented these rituals:

• Tracking financial and content performance

• Creating a weekly “non-negotiables” to-do list

• Saving and analyzing ALL of my to-do lists from the year

The result?

I cut out a lot of “fluff work.”

Getting clear on non-negotiables helped me align my efforts.

Now I can observe the compound effect of doing fewer tasks, for longer.

Why does this matter?

As we move toward 2024 I want to take things to another level.

I want to implement the systems that the best are using.

I want to move away from any “hobbyist” mindset with my work.

I want to turn this into a science.

To achieve this, I have been doing more research.

Brushing up on the process. (People need to be reminded, not taught)

The Scientific Method

As I was recapping, I could not wait to share with you guys.

Here is what I found.

The scientific method is broken down into 7 key stages:

  • Observation

  • Question Formulation

  • Hypothesis Development

  • Experimentation

  • Data Analysis

  • Conclusion

  • Reporting and Replication

For work and business, I compiled these into three stages:

1. Market Research (Hypothesis + Observation)

Start with what's in front of you.

Observe your work environment and the tasks you handle.

The challenges you/ your customers face.

This is your raw data mine.

Notice patterns, anomalies, or anything that sparks a question.

You want to be as blunt and realistic in this process.

Now, turn those observations into a powerful hypothesis.

Think, "If I tweak x, will it boost y?"

or

"What tools can I use to help me save time/money?"

It’s like placing a bet but with data as your chips.

You have studied your hand and analyzed the table.

Now it’s time to make some plays.

2. Experimentation (Take Action)

Here's where the magic happens.

Test your hypothesis.

Small changes can lead to big revelations.

Then, analyze the results.

Did your new approach work?

Is there a noticeable difference?

This step is all about learning by doing.

The goal is not to be right, the goal is to collect data.

What are the outcomes of the actions you devised?

Once we have this gold mine, it’s time to implement the most important step!

3. Data-driven Iteration (Process Improvement)

This is the step most people skip.

The boring work, looking at the data.

This is the work that is easy to skip over on Sunday.

But long term, it is the most important task you will do.

Use the outcomes of your tests to determine the success of the hypothesis.

Based on these results, you will do one of three things.

Persist, iterate, or pivot.

I have a process I use to determine which one I do, however, this is a personal decision.

Here is where clear goals and deadlines will be your compass.

Don’t overthink it, trust your gut, and get a second opinion if you need it.

After this step, you repeat the cycle, orienting towards your goals.

TL;DR

The Process For Removing Guess Work

  1. Thorough data collection

  2. Timely experimentation

  3. Consistent iteration
