“Anyone not busy learning is busy dying. For as long as you foster a willingness to learn, you will ward of sclerosis of the brain and hardening of the mental arteries. Curiosity has led many a man and woman into the valley of serious wealth.” — Felix Dennis
Why a Personal Brand Is Essential in 2024
This week I had an interesting conversation on X. (Is it X or twitter?)
One of my favorite marketing creators posed a question.
What is a strongly held marketing belief that you changed your mind on in 2023?

To which I replied…
Indirect, but I let go of the belief that people are actually being transparent with their content marketing.
Very few people who are actually “crushing it” share their strategies online and for free.

Then, out of nowhere, Rose made a very insightful reply to my response.
@heyitsalexP I think some of the best marketers out there are probably not on, or minimally active on Twitter or LinkedIn, really. They’re too busy doing good work vs trying to sell themselves

To which Alex promptly shot back…
@thecarlhinkson They may be good, but they’re not maximizing their earning potential unless they are really strong IRL networkers.
Building a personal brand online gives you career liquidity.

To my surprise, Rose replied by saying…
@thecarlhinkson I think that really depends on what their career path looks like. I can think of several incredible marketers I’ve worked with who most of ecomm twitter wouldn’t know. For some, a personal brand makes a ton of sense career wise, but I wouldn’t say it’s for everyone!

Finally, Alex made a very comprehensive reply, saying…

The whole interaction was very healthy in my eyes.
It brought about a question I often debate with my colleagues.
Is building a personal brand worth it or a waste of time?
And the answer is simple, it depends.
Consider these questions.
Throughout your ENTIRE career, do you want to:
Stay in your field?
Stay with your company?
Rely on one source of income?
Have your network consist of your immediate contacts?
Have your talents and accomplishments remain hidden?
If you answered “NO” to any of these questions, it is worth it to build your personal brand.
In today’s job market, innovation is happening faster than ever.
Companies change direction and disruption is the only constant.
How do you protect yourself?
Become one of one!
A personal brand is a new resume.
No longer will your degree be enough, social proof is king.
By simply creating content and sharing your journey online, you will:
create leverage in your field
build a new and trending skillset
expose yourself to new opportunities
It is not my job to convince you, you need to decide for yourself.
Honestly, for some people, a personal brand can be a distraction.
It is NEVER a substitute for doing the work.
With that being said, building online is like investing in your future success.
The day-to-day deposits might seem negligible, but the long-tail results are indisputable.
I have been building online since 2019 and I have a meager following, still, social media has created more opportunities for me than I could have imagined.
And I am sure they will only continue to grow.
Remember, the goal is not to be famous, the goal is to be top of mind.
As a mentor told me, “Talent is everywhere, opportunity is scarce.”
As you develop your talent, documenting online helps position you for opportunities.
Now the ball is in your court, take action.
Choose your platform to share on.
Make a sustainable plan.
Start pressing “post".
Thank me later.
