Business Is War
Hi guys, how are you doing this week?
I have something to admit this week.
I’ve been struggling.
The last two weeks have been extremely physically and mentally exhausting for me.
Between losing back-to-back games with my team, struggling with onboarding and setting up a new client for social ads, and feeling like I am fighting uphill to make valuable progress with Footytutor…I have been feeling it.
Admittedly, in the past, I would never share anything like this, especially not with my newsletter or social media audience.
Why?
Because who cares?
Everyone has problems, right?
So who has time to listen to me whine about mine?
And yes, maybe social media is not the place to vent about your problems. (I don’t believe it is)
However, I do believe that being transparent and showing the various facets of your life is what makes you most relatable. It’s what makes us human.
So there, you have it, the last few weeks have been tough for me and I don’t regret sharing that.
Recently, however, I have been watching a lot more summaries of historical events, particularly World War Two.
War is interesting.
One day you are on the offensive and you think you can conquer the world.
Your vision to write your people’s names as the greatest in the world seems so close to becoming reality.
Then out of nowhere, due to complacency and a series of strategic moves by your opponents, your army falls and you are contemplating suicide in a bunker in Berlin.
The opposite is also true. On many occasions, armies have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
Winning one key battle is sometimes the key to swinging the momentum and taking you on a completely new trajectory. Towards victory.
While brushing up on my history, one thing became very clear…
Just how similar wartime leaders are to modern-day startup founders.
Hold on, hear me out.
While world domination is maybe not the North Star for founders, the situations you find yourself in are quite similar.
Lots of people depend on you to make the final decisions.
Your vision and goals are what came together to create a reality that no one could see but you.
People laughed at you and your dreams when you started.
They laugh at you every day along the way when you are working.
But then, one day, they look up and realize exactly what you have achieved.
Now I prefer to be on the side of a startup founder. I believe creating value for the masses to consume is a much more noble pursuit than creating chaos.
But you can’t help but see the overlaps in the relentless pursuits of individual visions accompanied by gaining mass support for your vision and, finally, leaving a lasting impression on millions of people around the world.
So, what exactly am I saying?
I’m saying it isn’t over until the final whistle has been blown.
As long as you have another day of breath in your lungs, you have the chance to fight another battle.
And who knows, maybe this battle is where the tide turns.
Maybe in your darkest hour, the timing of your pursuit is perfectly poised to take you to heights you could have never imagined.
Maybe you weren’t early, or late, or dumb or lazy. Maybe you are right on time and everything will work out in your favor.
If it does, enjoy it while it lasts and know that complacency can easily be your downfall.
And hey, maybe your idea was stupid anyway, but at least you can always find other ways to offer value instead of being arrested or exiled for war crimes.
I promise to get back to actually sharing breakdowns of the moves I’m making to help create value instead of personal experiences. I’ve been in a testing phase recently and have been just trying to “figure it out” for myself.
To everyone else in a similar place today, keep going.
