No Growth Without Faith

Hi guys, how are you doing this week?

That’s great to hear. I’m doing ok, thanks for asking.

Been a bit anxious recently, but good anxious. Let me explain.

There are some pretty exciting times ahead for me!

Next week I will be off to Greece to represent my country.

Last year I participated in a seminar held by the Barbados Olympic Association which served as an intro to sports admin for youth athletes in the country.

At the event, attendees had the chance to give a presentation about how they thought the future of sports in Barbados could be altered.

There was a judging panel and the candidates who gave the BEST presentations would get the chance to represent Barbados at a similar international event which would be hosted in Greece.

Fortunately but with no surprise to me, I was deemed the winner, after my exhilarating presentation where I used real-world case studies to portray some possible avenues Barbados could take to boost health and wellness attitudes amongst the population.

In Greece, the best representatives from all around the world will meet in Athens for a much more in-depth look at the future of sports and how to promote the Olympic values through initiatives in each country.

I’m looking forward to the experience and I can’t wait to share my findings with you guys when it is all said and done.

On another, slightly more serious note, May just ended. Which was Mental Health Awareness Month.

I think setting aside a month to raise awareness around mental health is a great endeavor. However, I don’t think enough emphasis is put on teaching people about preventative care.

Similarly to the obesity epidemic going on right now, it is much more profitable to treat the bad symptoms of any degrading disease after it happens than to help people learn and implement structures in their lives that will prevent the onset of said health complications.

As someone who cares a lot about my mental health, I implore you to take some time to audit your time and $$ to see what you are spending on the preservation of a healthy mind state.

Some things to avoid:

  • excessive social media consumption

  • drugs and alcohol

  • poor sleep

Things to do more of:

  • meditate

  • exercise

  • journal

I don’t think I am saying anything revolutionary by putting forward these basic suggestions.

But I do think that in most cases people need to be reminded more than they need to be though.

I could go way more in-depth about this topic but I think that would be better served in a Youtube video, so probably look out for one in the future.

Finally, it’s the beginning of June

Summer is upon us and with her good weather she will bring many chances to create amazing memories.

Something that is very top of mind for me currently is faith.

Not necessarily anything to do with religion.

But a deep-rooted faith that no matter what, everything will be fine in the end.

In this moment, it’s easy to be scared/uneasy.

Everything happening with Israel/Palestine, the Ukraine/Russia situation, the potential for the warmest summer, and therefore higher rates of natural disasters, even the upcoming US election.

It’s easy to bury your head in the sand and just keep the blinders on to what you want to see.

But the truth is, we are all much more connected and in sync than we would like to put on.

Here is where I feel like faith is necessary.

Not just faith in yourself to make the best decisions to push forward in your life. But also faith in the greater good of humanity.

It is easy to slip into a bout of cynicism, but I urge you to lean into faith and lean into positive thinking.

On that note, I’m wishing you a June that far exceeds your expectations.

May people show up for you in ways that you never thought possible!
