Let's dive into it.

Show THEN Tell

Hello guys,

I hope all is well.

Some of you may have started new projects or set new goals for the second half of the year…

If you did, I hope everything is going well.

If you are off to a rocky start, remember to focus on progress, not perfection.

Progress by all costs has been very prevalent for me recently.

As I write this email, I am sitting on a train from Fredrikstad to Oslo in Norway.

My summer of European travels connecting with friends from college is going well so far.

The more I travel, the more one thing becomes clear to me…

There is nothing I would rather be doing than building my media company.

With this realization, I feel an obligation to share this truth with the world.

In the media world, attention pays.

It’s easy to be caught talking about concepts and initiatives.

It is much harder to live and execute the practices you preach.

Acknowledging this truth, I have adopted a new principle when it comes to sharing online.

Show THEN tell.

It is simple, do the work first, stress test the system, then build a first principles framework.

ALL this, before I share or talk about anything surrounding that project

Why? Because talking takes up valuable energy that can be used in building.

Habits that help Ryan Holiday be so prolific.

During my recent research for my personal brand, one thing became clear.

Many people are making clickbaity content sharing AI growth strategies.

Strategies that they have never tested and scaled.

This is a death trap for a personal brand.

It leads to empty clicks and it attracts people who are more impressed by concepts than execution.

The truth is, most strategies that work, are not flashy and clickbaity.

They are data intensive and require lots of iteration and nuance that can only truly be discovered and deployed by taking action over long periods.

It’s easy to “blow up” sharing clickbaity content.

You only become an authority when your strategies last the test of time and scale.

In all things you do, Show THEN tell.

AVOID This Content Curation Mistake

I made a huge mistake this week!

In an effort to start sharing my personal journey more, i’ve been posting more on my YouTube channel.

One strategy I have adopted is curating trending posts and making my commentary.

Admittedly I am still ironing out the kinks in this strategy and I came across one early roadblock.

After featuring a post about a running company “Bandit”, the creator reached out and shared his discomfort with the way I used his content.

My goal with this content is to:

  • Utilize trending topics

  • Utilize already viral content

  • Position myself next to authorities in my field

This is all good and well, but the execution is key.

I did a few things wrong in this post:

  • I never asked the creator if I could use his content

  • I did not tag the creator in the caption (only description)

  • My ratio of commentary to the amount of content share was too low

In my defense, his original post was too long for me to curate in less than 60 seconds (for YouTube shorts). To post on this placement, I did not have much room to share my thoughts.

Secondly, I thought that sharing his thoughts instead of taking his script and making my video was more ethical. It seems not to be the case.

Moving forward, here are a few rules I will use when curating content:

  • Ensure my input is at least 50% of the video

  • Tag in the caption and mention the original creator in the video

  • Forward my video to curated creators and tell them I am willing to remove it if they are not comfortable (Always ask for forgiveness, NOT permission)
